An AI study companion for maths and homework. Point the camera at a problem and it returns the reasoning, step by step, rather than just the answer.
About the project
The design question behind Socratic Owl is whether an AI homework tool helps a learner or replaces them. Handing back a bare answer teaches nothing. So the app breaks a problem into steps, shows the working, and offers more than one route to a solution where one exists.
Around the solver sits the rest of a study loop. Learners keep study sets and folders of what they have worked through, generate quizzes and flashcards from that material, and ask follow-up questions in a chat thread attached to the problem. There is a unit converter for the moments that need one, and the whole interface runs in five languages.
It is free to use with a daily credit allowance, with a subscription for heavier use.
What we did
DPRR develops the app on both iOS and Android and ships it on a continuous release cycle. Version 2.4.8 went out on 12 August 2026, roughly two years after the first release.
The work covers the scan-and-solve pipeline, the study features built on top of it, the subscription and onboarding flows, and the analytics used to see where learners actually get stuck.
- Scan and solve — Camera capture, image handling and the pipeline that turns a photographed problem into worked steps.
- Text solving — The typed-input route for problems that are quicker to write than photograph.
- Study sets and folders — Saving work, organising it and generating quizzes and flashcards from it.
- Follow-up chat — Threaded questions attached to a solved problem.
- Subscriptions — Paywall, trials, daily credits and restore-purchase handling.
- Localisation — Five interface languages: English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish.
- Instrumentation — Event tracking across onboarding, solving and subscription so decisions are made on measured behaviour.
How it is built
Subscriptions run through RevenueCat, with Firebase and Apple Search Ads attribution alongside, and PostHog for product analytics. The marketing site is a separate WordPress build behind Cloudflare, kept deliberately independent of the app release cycle.

Usage from our own product analytics, July 2026, the last complete month. Monthly active users went 398 in May, 1,485 in June, 3,199 in July. The 48,180 figure is successful solves, 47,533 from the camera and 647 typed. Search figures cover the marketing site only and include no in-app activity.
